big cat research in Sussex

Home;about BIGCATSINSUSSEX

BIGCATSINSUSSEX conducts non-intrusive research into wild big cats in Sussex, investigates sightings of big cats, also known as large wild cat, panther, black leopard or puma in both East and West Sussex, gathers photographic evidence in the form of deer and other animal kills, paw prints, fur samples etc. in order to better understand the  behaviour of these mystery big cats that live and breed in Sussex .......

WHAT ARE BIG CATS?

For the purposes of this website the term big cat denotes any cat larger than the common, garden variety of domestic cat types and breeds like British Short Hair and Maine Coons as some of the sightings clearly involve felines far different to these and some describe a large cat more the size of a black leopard or puma......

AIMS

Aims are to study and collect evidence of the behaviour and genetics of big cats and to promote understanding and tolerance of these intriguing, elusive creatures through sharing information on big cats which generally avoid any kind of conflict with humans having become an intrinsic and indispensible part of the British wildlife.....

TO REPORT A SIGHTING

To report a big cat sighting in Sussex please either click on the Contact Me box and e-mail,telephone/text me on 07722274033 or simply go on to the News section and comment(this can be anonymously with no personal details recorded) Any info is valued but by going to the Sightings form section a good idea of the sort of data that can be of use is listed........

PICTURES

Obtaining good quality photos of these big cats are treated as a priority to help guage what species they have come from and i am extremely grateful for photos from sightings contributed so far from the likes of Carol Cowley et al.My efforts are put into trail cameras that are used in specific locations whilst some researchers rely more  on being in  the right place at the right time but the Holy Grail of big cat pictures would be the one that provides indisputable evidence of the size, type and shape of these animals preferably including a prey item and with a clarity that has yet to be seen in photographs so far .Other evidence is also gathered from a variety of other sources and although personal and general locations will never be revealed unless specifically requested or is on public land,a general database on big cat movements and their other activities is continually being added to as it has been since 1991.This sort of knowledge has been found to be very useful on the occasions that bigcatsinsussex.co.uk are contacted and asked to help with a number of different big cat related issues......

AREA COVERED

All of Sussex is covered and information is gathered from all 4 corners of the county and as big cats know no county boundaries it is often necessary to cross the borders into the neighbouring counties in pursuit of knowledge of these far ranging and elusive creatures however principally the area from Ashdown Forest and Pevensey marsh in the east to Midhurst and the downs around Chichester in the west with Balcombe forests in the far north right down to the coastal downs is concentrated on as regards to research....

ABOUT THIS WEBSITE

Bigcatsinsussex.co.uk website is run solely by and has been set up by Charlie Bones aka bigcatdetective in answer to requests by people for a one stop site where they can quickly access the up to date information they need on the Sussex big cats instead of wading through the blog site and also as a central contact point for witnesses of big cat activity. This isn,t a sightings based website but goes a step further in giving the deeper, bigger picture by publishing the intriguing, complex and occasionally conflicting evidence gathered and the conclusions drawn as to the behaviour and activities of our Sussex big cats.......

FEEL FREE TO CONTRIBUTE

Your access to this website will open up specific pages that are meant as a tool for understanding more about the behaviour of the  big cats in Sussex that have been a mystery and are far from being even a little understood, the research consists partly of composing pieces of a fascinating and complex puzzle. As this study of these truly wild big cats depends to some degree on information gathered from witnesses there is ample scope for input from anyone to contribute either by e-mail or the comments sections whether anything to do with the specific news article or not.........

VIDEOS

MORE INFO

There are big cats all over Britain varying greatly in type though most appear to be British big cats and they feature regularly in online newspapers, a great tool to keep abreast of the National picture is to create Google alerts to your inbox by e-mail.Simply Google "Google alerts" click on the relevant page and create the search tags you like,i have big cat,big cats, mystery cat, sheep killed, deer killed and so on and so forth.Being Google it,s very user friendly and you can opt out at any time. All the online big cat news storys nationwide come into my inbox and this is very useful for example to get a gist of the types of big cat seen right across Britain,it,s become  an extremely important research tool.Another way ,which is highly recommended, is to go to the Britishbigcatresearch.org website. Big cat research by it`s very nature publishes a lot of it`s data online and numerous websites and Facebook groups have sprung up. This is a good thing as by transparency and debate we can advance our research to better understand these cats that we are all so interested in...

WHY GATHER EVIDENCE?

Although a great deal of work won,t be published due to assurances of privacy,a snapshot of sightings from witnesses, upcoming events and other news is posted on the news page although there is no intention to publish past years sightings. The evidence page is where pawprints, carcases exhibiting signs of cat kills and all sorts of other on the ground evidence which could of plausibly come from big cats is posted, here you will not find evidence of the existance of big cats in the wild,i already know there is a breeding population and i am not trying to convince any sceptics who have a right to their opinions as much as anyone else.It is evidence of how big cats behave, what and how they eatetc.etc. relevant evidence like this gathered in past years can be viewed on http://bigcatdetective.blogspot.com/ looking up the evidence, carcase and other labels........

There is no reason to be scared or intimidated by these animals which, like other wild creatures, will not attack unless it feels it,s own or cubs lives are threatened. They tend to avoid contact with people or pets and livestock attacks are rare .......

I am available to give my constructive opinions based on over 20 years of study on any big cat related issues that people may think i could help them with either by phone or e-mail.In the case of enquiries from outside Sussex and the neighbouring counties i will usually suggest contact is made with the local big cat researcher from that area whose details i can forward on.For second opinions on say ,possible evidence submitted ,however i am more than happy to help with.......

THANKS

A big thank you goes to the various contributors of additional material by firstly, other independent researchers from across Sussex, also to witnesses of big cat activity who have generously given over their time to tell me what they have encountered ,offered the evidence they have gathered and of course to the various farmers, landowners etc. without whose help i couldn,t  access a lot of the ground i need to and therefore publish a lot of the evidence and information on this website for public scrutiny ,therefore, without all these peoples kind help big cat research in Sussex would be that much harder if not impossible.......

HAVE YOU SEEN ONE?

If you have seen a big cat in Sussex or know of any possible activity please get in touch as soon as possible. If a carcase/s is found i am able to conduct a thorough survey of the immediate area together with that of the carcase, compile a necropsy report under veterinarian supervision and also swab with a view to testing by DNA analysis to attempt to guage firstly what species has killed the said animal and also which individual and so time is of the essence so a phone call may be preferable to you,if i don,t answer it i may be driving but can call you back usually within the hour or at a time which suits. My phone is on 24hours.....N.B. It is recomended that any livestock that don,t show clearly visible signs of predation to be looked at by a vet(under Defra guidelines of the possibility of a notifiable disease)
